Safety is our top priority:
The Dan Beard Council’s top priority is the safety of our
Scouts. Our resident camps constantly monitor the weather and takes precautions
if severe weather is anticipated. Weather is tracked through local television
news outlets, the Internet, as well as a radio weather service.
Adult leaders are oriented in emergency procedures at the
beginning of each camp session and written procedures are posted in each
campsite and major area of camp. Our resident camp facilities are modern and an
emergency siren is audible throughout the camp property. Concrete showerhouses
serve as storm shelters if severe weather approaches.
We train our camp staff at the beginning of each summer on
severe weather procedures. In case of an emergency, camp staff are sent to each
campsite to instruct leaders to move their Scouts to the concrete shower
houses. A headcount for each troop is taken and reported to a central command
of information. If we have implemented severe weather procedures, the
whereabouts of each Scout in camp is monitored.
