OKPIK is designed to develop confidence and skills in camping and living in the outdoors during extreme weather conditions. OKPIK includes instruction and involvement in winter shelters, equipment making, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and other winter camping skills. Camp comfortably in cold weather using specially made clothing. Enjoy safe methods of snow travel through a winter landscape. Learn about cold weather physiology and proper nutrition. Build a snow shelter and sleep snugly inside.
OKPIK is held at the Northern Tier High Adventure Base in Ely, Minnesota. Dates for OKPIK are December 27 through March 6. Minimum crew size is 6 people, maximum 8 people. Minimum age for all programs is 13 by the day of arrival except dog sled and skiing expeditions is 14 by day of arrival and Cold Weather training is 16 by day of arrival.
