Preparing for Camp

Leader's Guides

Adventure Camp Leader's Guide
The Leader's Guide is the main source for all information regarding summer camp programs, camp policies and procedures, maps, and much more. This document also includes all of the required registration forms and camper paperwork. While all of this information is also available on the Cub World website, the Leader's Guide is a convenient document with everything in one place that can be brought to a Pack or Den meeting, emailed to other leaders and parents, and brought to camp.

For Dan Beard Council Packs, this document will first distributed via the Pony Express folders at the January District Roundtable meetings. For out-of-council Packs, please contact the Dan Beard Council Scout Service Center to request a copy.

What to Expect

Important Camp Rules

Operation of a summer camp is guided by many rules, laws, and BSA national standards.  While our staff will always do their best to let you know the limitations of our programs, here are some of the most vital rules you should be aware of before arriving at camp:
  • Smoking is prohibited anywhere in front of campers, fellow leaders, or camp staff.  There is a designated smoking area in the treeline behind the dining pavilion.  Please do not smoke anywhere on camp property except for in the designated area.
  • Personal vehicles are not permitted in camp at any time.  This is for the safety of campers and to protect camp property.  Exceptions can be made for disabled campers (please request a pass at the camp office).  Carts will be provided for hauling gear for the Fun with Son program.  For Adventure Camp, gear will be hauled by the ranger staff to the camp areas.
  • The Little Miami River is considered off-limits to all campers.  This is a dangerous area that floods regularly.  Staff may lead nature hikes near the river during your stay, but otherwise please do not cross into the treeling bordering the river.
  • Francis, our resident Cub Scout Big Boy, is a large statue in front of the dining pavilion.  We encourage you to take pictures with Francis, or just stop and say hello, but please do not climb on Francis.
  • Alcohol is strictly prohibited from camp property.  Anyone found consuming or possessing alcoholic beverages will be asked to leave immediately.

Emergencies at Camp

The camp staff and the facilities are well-prepared for emergencies at camp.  Upon arrival, leaders will be informed of the camp emergency procedures.  It is imperative that if an emergency does occur, that campers follow the direction of the camp staff immediately.

Severe Thunderstorms:  It is quite possible that a severe thunderstorm may pass over camp during your stay.  If  there is a severe thunderstorm warning, the air horn will be sounded in intermittent blasts and campers should seek the closest shelter immediately.  Do not cross open areas or attemp to return to your lodging area -- seek the closest shelter.  All shelters are sturdy and designed to withstand heavy weather.  When the warning has passed, an air horn blast and the staff will announce an "all clear."

Tornados:  In the event of a tornado in the area, the air horn will sound with solid long blast and all campers should make their way as quickly as possible to the showerhouses.  The showerhouses are  solid block windowless buildings.  If a showerhouse cannot be reached immediately, find the closest low-lying area away from water (in case of flash-flooding) and remain there.  When the warning has passed, an air horn blast and the staff will announce an "all clear."

Other emergencies:  The staff are trained and prepared for all possible natural disasters at camp.  In the event of an emergency, listen closely to the direction of the camp staff.  Do not attempt to take matters into your own hands, as this will undermine the organization and efficiency of the emergency procedures.

Contacting camp in case of a home emergency:  If you have an emergency at home and you must contact a camper or adult at camp, please call the camp office at (513) 831-8311 ext. 125.  If you cannot reach someone immediately, call the Camp Director, Toby Brown, at (513) 659-9832.  Emergencies may include a death or severe illness of a family member or a disaster at home.
